Ahh, Troma. What needs to be said? Masters of manipulation when it comes to misleading movie titles and poster art. You can’t polish a turd, but Troma have time and time again given it their best.

I would have to assume my first exposure to Troma was the Toxic Avenger. It’s what made them a household name. From then, I guess I sought out other Troma titles on the video shelves, usually resulting in disappointment, but that would never deter future rentals. When pay TV first arrived in Australia, my grandparents signed up and my Papa would let us go through the monthly guide, circle any movies we wanted to see, and he would program the VCR to record them for us. There were always bags of VHS tapes going back and forth via my Dad. Arena used to air lots of Troma on their Graveyard Shift. Midnight on Fridays, if I recall correctly?

Once video stores started to sell off all their VHS tapes to make way for DVD, I picked up a few more titles for my own collection. The online Troma website had heaps of titles available on DVD, but the absolutely ludicrous postage charges (which, even now in 2014, haven’t changed!) made it hard to get Troma DVDs in Australia. Minotaur on Elizabeth St. had the US Troma imports but the prices were rather prohibitive.

Siren Entertainment (1997-1998)

Here’s a list of the VHS tapes put out by Siren in the late 90s. The sell-throughs were (mostly? or all) packaged with the black and gold Troma Collector’s Edition art.

Tribe / JJC Entertainment Pty Ltd (2000)

Tribe and JJC Entertainment were the first to put Troma onto DVD locally, and had a bit of a headache with the censors due to the Troma Intelligence Test included in the special features on most (all?) Troma titles. According to Refused Classification, not all of the titles they had planned ended up being released. Here’s what was available, I’m not sure if they all ended up being availble to purchase or not.

Jigsaw Entertainment (2010-2011)

Another five years later, and there was another batch of Troma titles released, this time by Jigsaw Entertainment/Gryphon. They rehashed a lot of the same previous titles, but it was nice to see a lot of new ones too. They were releasing them steadily month by month but it dried up by mid-2011 and there’s been nothing new since then. They released 43 titles in total (not counting the box sets).
